Defibrillation in Models of Cardiac Muscle
نویسنده
چکیده
The propagation of electrical activity in cardiac tissue can be modelled by reaction diffusion equations, where a tensor of diffusion coefficients represents anisotropy due to fibre orientation, and excitation is represented by high-order, stiff differential systems. The effects of external electrical stimulation, as in artificial pacemakers, or in defibrillators, requires bidomain models, in which intraand extracellular currents are treated separately. Simplified approaches are taken to this problem to illustrate two methods of defibrillation: by a single large pulse, that eliminates all propagating activity, and by a series of smaller amplitude perturbations, that drive out re-entrant sources of excitation.

Time to defibrillation after in-hospital cardiac arrest.
BACKGROUND Delays to defibrillation are associated with worse survival after in-hospital cardiac arrest, but the degree to which hospitals vary in defibrillation response times and hospital predictors of delays remain unknown. METHODS Using hierarchical models, we evaluated hospital variation in rates of delayed defibrillation (>2 minutes) and its impact on survival among 7479 adult inpatient...
متن کاملAn analysis of the shock strength needed to achieve defibrillation in a simplified mathematical model of cardiac tissue
The pumping function of the heart is driven by an electrical wave traversing the cardiac muscle in a well-organized manner. Perturbations to the wave are referred to as arrhythmias. Such arrhythmias can, under unfortunate circumstances, turn into fibrillation. The only known therapy for fibrillation is to reset the heart using a strong electrical shock. This process is referred to as defibrilla...
متن کاملThe prediction of defibrillation outcome using a new combination of mean frequency and amplitude in porcine models of cardiac arrest.
UNLABELLED We estimated the predictive power with respect to defibrillation outcome of ventricular fibrillation (VF) mean frequency (FREQ), mean peak-to-trough amplitude (AMPL), and their combination. We examined VF electrocardiogram signals of 64 pigs from 4 different cardiac arrest models with different durations of untreated VF, different durations of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and use o...
متن کاملDelayed time to defibrillation after intraoperative and periprocedural cardiac arrest.
BACKGROUND Delay in defibrillation (more than 2 min) is associated with worse survival in patients with a cardiac arrest because of ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia in intensive care units and inpatient wards. METHODS We tested the relationship between delayed defibrillation and survival from intraoperative or periprocedural cardiac arrest, adjusting for baseline ...
متن کاملBiventricular Defibrillation with Sequential Shocks Using Patient-derived Computational Models
Standard transvenous defibrillation is performed with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) using a dualcurrent pathway. The defibrillation energy is delivered from the right ventricle (RV) electrode to the superior vena cava (SVC) electrode and the ICD metallic housing. Clinical studies of biventricular defibrillation, which uses an additional electrode, placed on the left ventricular ...
